TEACHERS ON THE MOVE
... THE NEXT CHALLENGE
BY: edupreneur I. E. BELIEVE,
Empirical research shows that the key
to growth, improved performance, productivity, increased and a sustained profit
is a motivated workforce. The workforce in this context is the TEACHER, who
though is the key and most important factor for every school growth is so
poorly treated.
In the school business of today, school owners need to
concern themselves with how to retain their workforce, the teacher. The
proprietor next street is not a nice guy. He wants you out of business for his
school to increase in profit and population. This has resulted in the stiff
competition among the schools creating a saturated school business market.
The stiff competition in this over saturated school business
will open windows of opportunities and choices for five major people or players
in the school business. These people, even presently are the major benefactors
of the stiff competition and over saturation. These people are:
1. Parents
2. Students
3. Teachers
4. School Consultants
5. Book publishers, sellers, and vendors.
Though chief in the list are parents and students. But the
gainer that will have adverse effect on the school is the teacher. If you are
wondering how the teacher will gain, then let me educate you. When teachers are
poorly treated:
1.
They
can leave your school to the school of another proprietor who will gladly
accept them with a higher salary and they will say that the teacher is more
experienced.
2.
The
teacher may look for jobs in other industries which means you have lost a vital
resource to another sector and you will say, there is brain drain in the
educational sector.
3.
Such
teachers may get frustrated and start their own schools, maybe few streets away
from yours and join the same union with you. And become a competitor and
colleague.
4.
May demand better remuneration beyond your
capacity and people will label your school as low paying.
The truth is, every time a good
teacher leaves a school, it leads to withdrawal of students. Also, the learning
ability of students or pupils is hampered as most students will be faced with
the problem of adjusting to the new teacher and their teaching skills and
styles. In some cases, excessive work load is shifted to other staff which makes
them ineffective.
Bottom line is, in the school
business of today, the workforce called the teacher is king, not the customer
called the parent (or the parent called the customer). Therefore, learn the
keeping strategy, because the next challenge is, teachers are on the move!
