10 COMMON MISTAKES TAILORING/ FASHION BUSINESS OWNERS MAKE

There are many tailoring shops on every street operating in the most mundane manner without any touch of creative business mind.  These tailors are constantly struggling to get customers as they bank on hope marketing.


One can conclude that these set of entrepreneurs who just turned their skills into business did not learn the business in and of their talents or skills. This has made them see tailoring business from a mundane perspective.

They have no business model, neither do they have a system or strategy for growth. They make certain mistakes that make all the tailoring businesses seems to be in a vicious cycle as all of them seem to be doing the same thing and expecting a different result.



So here are some common mistakes which tailoring shops make that has reduced their profiting and business growth.

•¶ Focus only on walk-in customers:

 the conventional tailor was taught by a tailor who was taught by another tailor that they should sow clothe for people who walk into their shop. With this mindset, we have tailors who do no marketing and have no system of getting customers. They work best by hope marketing.

Hence, they do not have a definite financial plan or projection for their business.

•¶ Simple accounting and customer data tracking sheet:

I once gave my friend’s wedding clothe to a tailor to sew and the guy actually took my measurement.

Few days later when I came back, the cloth the guy gave me was so small it could not even pass through my head. In the course of questioning the guy, I realized that he didn’t document my measurement and has used eye measurement ( whatever that means!)
This also goes to tell that alot of the tailoring shops do not have financial records, phone numbers of their customers, books for their customers measurement etc

 This makes the tailoring business so mundane and irritating for the average person who needs to sow clothes.

•¶ They don’t understand the difference between tailoring and fashion design:

while tailors constantly replicate the designs of others perfectly, designers create and develop entirely new designs and styles. Some persons are just fashion designers.

A creative serial entrepreneur in the fashion business should combine tailoring with fashion designing and get paid for both services.

They turned their skill/passion into business without learning about the business in fashion business or tailoring. It is important that every technical or skilled entrepreneur learn the business in their skills.

Over time, we have seen tailors who do not have the basics of business communication, accounting, entrepreneurial principles, etc. this is because; they only learned the technical aspect of their business. As a tailor or fashion designer, you must read and learn about the business in fashion business.

•¶  Limiting belief with old business model:

 when you walk into a tailors' shop, especially the female tailors’ shop, you will see pieces of clothes, new clothes and old, plates and spoons, and many other junks littered everywhere on the floor of the shops. It doesn’t just seem like a business.

•¶ The tailoring shops are mainly owned by persons who learnt tailoring through semi-formal means, but with a lot of more educated persons stepping into the tailoring business, it won’t be business as usual for the traditional tailoring shop.

Hence, survival by the regular tailoring or fashion shop owner will be to find answers to the mentioned mistakes they have been identified.
